Tessera 33. Stars Mosaic (Cástulo, Linares, Spain)

Light beige tessera from the Star Mosaic located in Building D of Area 2 at the Cástulo archaeological site (Linares, Jaén, Spain). It forms part of the upper circular decorative motif. Raman spectroscopy shows the presence of dolomite [CaMg(CO₃)₂]. Elemental analysis by XRF indicates a high concentration of Ca (57.67 wt%), followed by 26.66 wt% Mg and 11.23 wt% Si. The raw material used in its creation was therefore a dolomite rock or a dolomitic limestone with a high silicon content.

Raman Microscopy

Mineralogical analysis

Non destructive. Surface cleaning. Sample pretreatment is not required. Direct measurement.

Portable Raman spectrometer (model BWS445-785S innoRam) equipped with a CCD detector, a handheld fiber-optic probe, an automated MicroBeam tripod, a benchtop stand for small samples, and a BAC151A camera (University Research Institute for Iberian Archaeology, University of Jaén). A 785 nm diode laser (300 mW) was used, with a spectral resolution better than 4.5 cm-1

X-Ray Fluorescence

Elemental analysis

Non destructive. Surface cleaning. Sample pretreatment is not required. Direct measurement.

Olympus Vanta C portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer with a rhodium (Rh) anode X-ray tube and a 20 mm² SDD detector. An aluminum (Al) filter was applied to measure high-Z elements (Z > 26) with a voltage of 40 kV and a current of 38.7 µA. Without Al-filter, a voltage of 10 kV and a current of 50.8 µA were used for low-Z elements (12 > Z > 26). Measurements were performed in air for 60 s. The dimensions of the X-ray beam collimator were 3 × 3 mm².
