Tessera 27. Erotes mosaic, Marroquíes Altos (Jaén, Spain)

Beige tessera belonging to the mosaic of the Erotes of Marroquíes Altos (Jaén, Spain). Raman analysis indicates the presence of calcite (CaCO3), and XRF analysis shows a high concentration of Ca, and a lower presence of Si and Al. All of this allows the identification of limestone as the raw material used in the manufacture of the tessera.

Raman Microscopy

Mineralogical analysis

Non destructive. Surface cleaning. Sample pretreatment is not required. Direct measurement.

Portable Raman spectrometer (model BWS445-785S innoRam) equipped with a CCD detector, a handheld fiber-optic probe, an automated MicroBeam tripod, a benchtop stand for small samples, and a BAC151A camera (University Research Institute for Iberian Archaeology, University of Jaén). A 785 nm diode laser (300 mW) was used, with a spectral resolution better than 4.5 cm-1

X-Ray Fluorescence

Elemental analysis

Non destructive. Surface cleaning. Sample pretreatment is not required. Direct measurement.

Portable Olympus Innov-X Delta Premium X-ray fluorescence spectrometer equipped with a rhodium (Rh) anode X-ray tube and a 20 mm2 SDD detector. An aluminum (Al) filter was applied to measure high-Z elements (from Fe onward) using a voltage of 40 kV and a current of 38.7 µA. Without filtering (low-Z elements), a voltage of 10 kV and a current of 50.8 µA can be applied. Measurements were performed in air for 150 s. The X-ray excitation beam was collimated through a window with dimensions of 3×3 mm2
