Tessera 116. Erotes mosaic, Marroquíes Altos (Jaén, Spain)

Light green tessera from the Erotes mosaic at Marroquíes Altos (Jaén, Spain). It is made of glass. XRF analysis shows a low presence of Cu and Pb. This absence suggests that the color may be due to the presence of Fe in the glass matrix. This lack of Cu and Pb indicates that the colour can be attributed to the presence of Fe within the glassy matrix in the form of ferric oxide (Fe³⁺). In conventional soda–lime–silicate glasses, the total iron content and a higher Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ ratio result in a residual greenish hue.

X-Ray Fluorescence

Elemental analysis

Non destructive. Surface cleaning. Sample pretreatment is not required. Direct measurement.

Portable Olympus Innov-X Delta Premium X-ray fluorescence spectrometer equipped with a rhodium (Rh) anode X-ray tube and a 20 mm2 SDD detector. An aluminum (Al) filter was applied to measure high-Z elements (from Fe onward) using a voltage of 40 kV and a current of 38.7 µA. Without filtering (low-Z elements), a voltage of 10 kV and a current of 50.8 µA can be applied. Measurements were performed in air for 150 s. The X-ray excitation beam was collimated through a window with dimensions of 3×3 mm2
