Tessera 10. Tethys mosaic, Villa of Bruñel (Quesada, Jaén, Spain)

Yellow tessera belonging to the Tethys mosaic of the Roman villa of Bruñel. It is located in a semicircular motif that forms the frame around the face of Thetis. Raman analysis indicates the presence of calcite (CaCO3), and X-ray fluorescence shows a high concentration of Ca and smaller amounts of Si, Al, and K. The raw material used was therefore limestone.

Portable Raman spectrometer (model BWS445-785S innoRam) equipped with a CCD detector, a handheld fiber-optic probe, an automated MicroBeam tripod, a benchtop stand for small samples, and a BAC151A camera (University Research Institute for Iberian Archaeology, University of Jaén). A 785 nm diode laser (300 mW) was used, with a spectral resolution better than 4.5 cm-1

Espectrómetro XRF portátil Bruker Tracer III SD (Laboratorio HERCULES, Universidad de Évora, Portugal). Está equipado con un detector SDD de silicio de 10 mm² y un ánodo de Rh que emite un haz de rayos X policromático de 3×3 mm². Los espectros se adquirieron a 40 kV y una corriente de 11 μA, con un tiempo de medida de 30 s. Este método analítico permite detectar elementos químicos con número atómico (Z) superior a 12.
